What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns are fixed prosthesis that can be fabricated using a number of different materials and are used to cover a structurally compromised tooth. The purpose of covering a tooth using a crown, commonly known as a cap, is to restore the structural stability, strength and aesthetics of the tooth. The selection of material for a crown is based on the location of the tooth in the arch, aesthetic requirements and the occlusal or masticatory forces that the restored tooth will be subjected to.

Is the procedure painful?
The dental crown procedure requires initial preparation or trimming of the tooth to ensure a good fit for the crown. This is achieved using a mechanical hand-piece fitted with burs. When the ideal tooth preparation has been done, an impression of the tooth is taken which is then used to fabricate the crown. Dental crowns are generally readied in dental laboratories and therefore the procedure may take 2-3 sittings to complete. Once the crown has been fabricated, a trial session is conducted whereby the occlusion, shade and fit are checked. The crown is then cemented onto the tooth. For patients sensitive to pain, local anesthesia is administered during the tooth preparation phase. The remaining stages are entirely painless.
