Tooth pain can range from mild sensitivity to severe, debilitating pain. Understanding the possible cause can help you know what to expect and how urgently you need care.
Tooth Decay or Cavity
The most common cause of toothaches. When decay reaches the inner layers of your tooth, it irritates the nerve and causes pain that may worsen with hot, cold, or sweet foods.
Dental Abscess or Infection
A pocket of pus caused by bacterial infection. This can cause severe, constant throbbing pain, swelling, fever, and a bad taste in your mouth. This requires immediate attention.
Cracked or Fractured Tooth
A crack in the tooth may not always be visible but can cause sharp pain when biting or sensitivity to temperature changes. Pain may come and go.
Gum Disease
Advanced gum disease can cause teeth to become loose and painful. You may notice bleeding gums, recession, or persistent bad breath alongside the toothache.
Exposed Root or Worn Enamel
When enamel wears away or gums recede, the sensitive root surface becomes exposed, causing sharp pain with hot, cold, or acidic foods and drinks.
Impacted Wisdom Tooth
A wisdom tooth that hasn’t fully erupted can cause pressure, pain in the back of the jaw, swelling, and difficulty opening your mouth.
What to Do Right Now
While you wait for your appointment, these steps can help manage your pain:
- Rinse with warm salt water — mix ½ teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water and gently swish for 30 seconds. This helps reduce bacteria and inflammation.
- Take over-the-counter pain relief — ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) is typically most effective for dental pain as it reduces both pain and inflammation. Follow the dosage instructions on the label.
- Apply a cold compress — hold an ice pack wrapped in a cloth against the outside of your cheek for 15–20 minutes. This helps reduce swelling and numb the area.
- Avoid hot, cold, and sugary foods — stick to room-temperature, soft foods until you can see the dentist.
- Do NOT put aspirin directly on the tooth — this is a common myth that can actually burn your gum tissue.
When to Seek Immediate Care
Call us right away if you experience any of the following alongside your toothache:
- Fever or facial swelling
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Pain that lasts more than 1–2 days
- Pus or foul taste in your mouth
- Pain that radiates to your ear, jaw, or head
