Dental Infections Can Be Serious

A dental abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection. Unlike many health issues, dental infections do not resolve on their own. Without treatment, the infection can spread to your jaw, head, neck, and in rare but serious cases, your bloodstream. If you have facial swelling, fever, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, call us immediately or go to the ER.

Signs You May Have a Dental Infection

Severe, Throbbing Pain

Abscess pain is often intense, persistent, and throbbing. It may radiate to your jawbone, ear, or neck on the same side. The pain often gets worse when lying down.

Swelling in Your Face or Jaw

Facial swelling near the affected tooth is a clear sign of infection. The area may feel warm to the touch. In severe cases, the swelling can make it difficult to open your mouth.

Fever & General Illness

A fever, swollen lymph nodes, or feeling generally unwell alongside dental pain indicates your body is fighting an active infection that needs professional treatment.

Bad Taste or Pus

A foul, salty taste in your mouth may indicate the abscess has ruptured and is draining. While this may temporarily relieve pressure, the infection still needs treatment.

Sensitivity to Hot & Cold

An infected tooth is often extremely sensitive to temperature. Hot foods and drinks may cause especially sharp pain as they increase pressure inside the abscess.

Darkened or Loose Tooth

A tooth that has changed color or become loose may indicate the nerve has died from infection. The tooth may no longer hurt, but the infection is still present and spreading.

What to Do Right Now

  1. Call us immediately — dental infections need professional treatment. Antibiotics alone won’t cure an abscess; the source of infection must be addressed.
  2. Take ibuprofen for pain — it reduces both pain and swelling. Follow the dosage on the label.
  3. Rinse with warm salt water — this can help draw pus to the surface and provide temporary relief. Rinse gently several times a day.
  4. Don’t apply heat to your face — while it may feel soothing, heat can cause the infection to spread faster.
  5. Keep your head elevated — when lying down, prop your head up with extra pillows to reduce throbbing.

Go to the ER Immediately If You Have

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Swelling spreading to your eye or neck
  • High fever (over 101°F / 38.3°C)
  • Feeling confused or very drowsy
  • Rapid heart rate

These signs indicate the infection may be spreading and requires emergency medical care. After the ER stabilizes you, call us to treat the dental source of the infection.
